* The 47 apps that have been banned now are mostly clones and variants of the applications which were blocked earlier, the source privy to the development said.
* The government had last month banned 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok, CamScanner, Shareit, UC Browser, Baidu Map, Bigo Live and Vigo Video. The banned apps also included Helo, Likee, Mi Video Call - Xiaomi, Clash of Kings as well as e-commerce platforms Club Factory and Shein.
* Some reports also said 275 other Chinese apps could also be on the chopping block over similar concerns, including the hugely popular "PUBG Mobile" game owned by tech giant Tencent.
"Indian data integrity needs to be protected (similar to territorial integrity) and the government has taken this important step in interest to protect national data. This ban will boost creativity and acceptability for Indian apps and products, and developers are to take complete advantage of this situation. The current national resistance towards non-Indian products will help Indian brands with a platform to replace them with a better quality product, competing with strong International brands on a global stage," says Sonit Jain, CEO of GajShield Infotech.
Earlier today, few reports also claimed that the Indian government has prepared a list of 275 apps which are under scrutiny for violation of national security and user privacy. This list reportedly includes PUBG Mobile, Ludo World, 14 Mi apps by Xiaomi, AliExpress, Resso, and ULike. Notably, though, the government is yet silent on this.
* The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures, the ministry's statement of June 29 had said.
* The IT ministry had invoked its power under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act and rules to block the 59 apps in view of information available that they were "engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order."
* Tensions between the two countries soared last month after a border clash in Ladakh that left 20 Indian troops dead and an unknown number of Chinese casualties
